Dying Matters Week | Ann Atkin – ‘What If’

May 15, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Free

What if the worst happens and you or your partner are given a terminal diagnosis? How do you tell your dependent children? How do you navigate the trajectory of the illness? How do you prepare for the future?

Come and join us for an information sharing session presented by Ann Atkin. What are we afraid of in talking to children about death & dying? How do we break bad news to children?

Ann will be busting the myths about children’s understanding of death and dying, share other relevant resources that could help families to have such conversations with children and will help professionals to support families who may find themselves in such situations.

Former Family Support Officer, Ann Atkin retired this March following 13 years with the team at St Kentigern Hospice. During her time at the hospice Ann has made a huge contribution to the care and support provided at the hospice. She has provided  support to children and families who have been affected by a terminal diagnosis of their loved one or death. Ann supported both patients and their families through one to one sessions, bereavement friendship groups and also trained specialist volunteers to assist with our weekly Tea at Three Bereavement drop in service. Ann has established our Child Bereavement Service, which has helped many children and young people coping with grief in the local communities. She has also written a book ‘Everything’s Changing’ which has been used by many services supporting Young people and children both locally and nationally.  She has provided training to professionals from health and social services

In Cardiff in November 2017, Ann’s hard work and dedication to the role was celebrated with two Gold awards at the Care Awards Wales, the first in Excellence in Palliative and End of Life Care, and the second in Dignity in Care.
